I heard editing them with a tool is possible. Anybody know how?

There is Lunaboy's tool that can turn Tga files into Bti files. (I think that is the file format. I'm doing this off of memory, so I'm not 100% sure.) There is also another tool that converts Bti to Tga. (Again, the format may be wrong, but that is how I edited some images)

EDIT: I use Paint.NET to edit the Tga files.

Yeah. Paint.net is one of the best free image editing tools alive.
